Open Season On Open Houses
With the weather warming up and the holiday season over it’s Open House time again. You may be the professional open house hunter with a mapped out strategy or maybe you saw a sign on the corner and followed the arrows the open. Either way, a few open house views may be just what you need.
Here are some ABC’s of open houses:
Ask plenty of questions. Whether the agent showing the house is the listing agent or an agent representing them, utilize them however you need. That person is in the market and will likely know about the home and neighborhood. When I bought my first house I actually met my agent at an open house. If you’re not working with an agent then use this as an interview to see if you can form a long term business relationship. You’ll want someone on your side, an advocate for you once you get serious in the market.
Bring a positive attitude. The house you’re looking at may not be the house for you today but with just a little bit of TLC it could be a diamond in the rough. Don’t be overwhelmed if the work is cosmetic and the house is not move in ready right now. A positive attitude about the wrong strange paint or counter tops that you would not have chosen can be the difference between you leaving the open house excited for possibilities or disappointed. Winston Churchill said “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”
Come on in. You cannot really know much about a house if all you do is drive by. Most people wouldn’t buy a car without test driving so why simply drive by an open house without seeing the inside.
